Notes on the week of August 31 2026

Hello, a few notes on the week of August 31st, although being recorded the week after.

Big milestone for us was dropping our son Owen off at Queen’s University.

He’s starting up engineering there.

We’re all very excited, of course.

My wife and I are Queen’s grads, so it was great fun for us to walk around campus again, check out some of our favorite sites, and then have a nice meal at one of our favorite restaurants, Casa Domenico down there.

So all that was quite great.

Of course, exciting, nerve-wracking, all the feels for Owen to be starting university, and then us returning to a house with no kids in it.

Definitely going to be an adjustment for us, having finally raised them all and gotten them out of the house, knowing, of course, that they’ll come back probably at some point over time, which is totally fine.

But still, big milestone for us to have moved into this new phase where, you know, we just have George the dog in the house now, so he’ll be getting all sorts of cuddles from my wife, no doubt.

In terms of some media stuff, finally caught up on the recent season of Silo.

I had to take a break from that while I was on vacation.

Not a tough thing to do, but now caught back up.

Great show there.

Super excited to see how that plays out.

I think there’s one more season.

Now I’m starting up on the latest season of Strange New Worlds, so many episodes behind on that too, but looking forward to catching up on that, as well as listening to the Vulcan Hello podcast, where they always have an interesting conversation about each episode.

Between returning to work after the vacation, getting Owen off to university, my training certainly took a hit over the last couple of weeks, but I do have a Spartan obstacle course race coming up in just over a month, so I’m shifting away from the triathlon training to more upper body training for many of those obstacles.

So I’ve been pretty leg-dominant over the last little while in terms of running and biking.

I need to get into the pull-ups and the other lifting heavy objects and grip strength and all those sorts of things that you need for a Spartan obstacle course race.

So nice to shift things up a little bit.

Certainly sticking with triathlons, but it can be fun to mix up the training a bit and try some new forms.

So that should keep me busy for the next couple of weeks as well.

So yeah, that’s last week.
